Stephen Henson, 61, and Ann Henson, 56, were found dead Sunday at a home near Mixon Street and Zahler Street in Yemassee, South Carolina. Their deaths have left family members and others in the small Hampton County community facing a painful loss.
Yemassee police went to the residence after receiving a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they first found Ann inside the home with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Officers then secured and cleared the residence before finding Stephen, who had also been shot.

The Hampton County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the couple on Monday. Investigators are now working to piece together what happened inside the home and how the two deaths occurred.
Police said their preliminary investigation points to a murder-suicide involving the couple. That finding remains part of an active investigation, and authorities have not released further details about what led to the shooting.
The incident appears to have been isolated, police said, and there is no ongoing threat to the wider community. A large law enforcement response was seen in the area as investigators worked to process the scene and collect evidence.
SLED crime scene personnel and regional agents assisted the Yemassee Police Department. The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, emergency personnel and the coroner’s office also helped at the scene as investigators continued their work.
An autopsy has been scheduled as officials continue examining the deaths. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while the investigation remains active.
For those who knew Stephen and Ann, the tragedy is now more than a police investigation. It is the sudden loss of two people whose lives were tied to family, friends and a community that knew them. The circumstances of their deaths have raised questions, but officials have so far released only the information needed to confirm what happened.
The focus now turns to the Henson family and the people closest to them as they deal with the loss. More information could be released as investigators complete their work and the autopsy findings become available.
