Kendreck Murry Jr., 26, of Nashville, was killed early Monday after his 2011 Hyundai Genesis crashed into the back of a Peterbilt garbage truck on Interstate 40 East near Old Hickory Boulevard in Nashville, Tennessee.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday, August 24. According to witnesses, Murry was driving at an extremely high rate of speed when his Hyundai struck the rear of the garbage truck. The force of the crash sent the truck overturning and left Murry’s car on fire.

Murry died at the scene, according to Metro Nashville police. No one else was seriously injured in the crash.

Investigators said speed appears to have been a preliminary factor in the collision. Police have not said that impairment caused the crash, but toxicology testing will be done to determine whether alcohol or drugs played any role.

The crash unfolded on I-40 East during the early morning hours, when traffic is typically lighter. The impact was severe enough to overturn the Peterbilt truck and ignite the Hyundai.

Police identified Murry after the fatal collision as investigators worked to determine exactly what led to the crash. At this stage, authorities have pointed to the Hyundai’s speed as the main contributing factor identified in the investigation.

Toxicology results could provide more information about what happened before the crash. Until those results are available, investigators have not said whether impairment was involved.

For Murry’s family and those who knew him, the crash marked a sudden and painful loss. He was 26 years old when his life ended on the Nashville interstate early Monday morning.

The investigation remains focused on the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the speed of the Hyundai and whether any impairment contributed. Police have not reported any other serious injuries from the crash.

Condolences to his family.
