Ian Roberts walked out of his Roseville home around 9:45 a.m. on Friday, August 21, dressed in a brown t-shirt, dark shorts, and gray shoes. A Ring doorbell camera caught his last steps leaving the house. The 24-year-old was heading out for a simple day hike, driving up Interstate 80 into nearby Placer County. He parked his car near the skate park at Overlook Park in Auburn, where trails lead straight down into the American River Canyon.
Roberts was not a frequent hiker, but the trails off Overlook Park are popular with locals and visitors looking for quick access to the Auburn State Recreation Area. The path descends sharply from the park down toward the North Fork of the American River. Friends and family expected him back in Roseville by Friday evening. When night fell and he had not returned home or checked in, worry set in fast.

By 4:45 a.m. Saturday morning, August 22, his family officially reported him missing to the Roseville Police Department. Relatives worked closely with officers to track down his vehicle. They traced it to the parking lot at Overlook Park in Auburn, confirming he had traveled to the canyon area the previous morning and had never come back up.
Placer County Sheriff’s deputies immediately launched a search operation across the American River Canyon. Ground crews fanned out along the dirt switchbacks while scent-tracking dogs worked the steep slopes. Sheriff’s helicopters flew personnel into remote sections of the canyon floor, and drones scanned the thick canopy from above while marine patrol units checked the riverbanks.
Summer heat made the search tougher by the hour. By Monday, August 24, temperatures inside the canyon climbed into the mid-90s, creating dangerous conditions for search crews and missing persons alike. More than 100 trained responders from a dozen Northern California agencies joined the effort, scouring miles of dense brush and rocky cliffs.
The search ended on Tuesday, August 25, when search teams located Roberts’ body within Auburn city limits inside the Auburn State Recreation Area. Placer County Sheriff’s officials reported that Roberts appeared to have slipped and lost his footing along a steep embankment, falling down the drop-off. Investigators found no indication of foul play at the site.
The Auburn Police Department took over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. After four days of waiting and watching search operations, family members and the local community received the heartbreaking news. The quiet Roseville resident lost his life in a tragic accident just miles from home.
