Hubert Matherne III, a 40-year-old local known to friends and family as “Dougie,” died early Wednesday morning on a stretch of U.S. Highway 90 in St. Charles Parish.
The fatal crash happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. near Carlon Drive in the quiet community of Des Allemands.
State troopers said Matherne was walking in the westbound lanes when a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse traveling west struck him directly in the roadway.
He was wearing light-colored clothes at the time of the collision. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene from his injuries.
The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse was wearing a seat belt and did not suffer any physical injuries in the crash.
State police do not believe impairment played a role in the crash. Troopers still collected routine toxicology samples for analysis.
Troopers are still working to figure out why Matherne was walking on the highway lanes and what happened right before he was hit.
