Hubert Matherne III was walking along U.S. Highway 90 in St. Charles Parish when an oncoming vehicle struck and killed him early Wednesday morning.
State police troopers were called to the scene near Carlon Drive in Des Allemands shortly before 3:30 a.m.
Investigators found that Matherne was walking inside the westbound traffic lanes when a westbound 2020 Chevrolet Traverse hit him in the right lane.
Matherne was wearing light-colored clothing when the vehicle hit him. He died on the spot from severe injuries.
The driver of the SUV had a seat belt on and walked away from the crash without any injuries.
Investigators said alcohol or drug impairment does not appear to be a factor. Troopers still gathered standard toxicology samples as part of the investigation.
Police have not announced any charges as they continue looking into the events leading up to the fatal collision.
