Ceaira Cook just finished her Friday afternoon shift at Summa Health Barberton Hospital and walked outside toward the parking area. The 34-year-old Akron resident worked as a cashier in the hospital kitchen. Around 3:05 p.m., her everyday workday routine ended in a sudden disaster right on campus grounds.

As Cook crossed near the facility docking area, a commercial linen truck backed up through the bay. The vehicle hit her before she could step out of the way. Coworkers and bystanders rushed to help, moving her straight into the emergency department just steps away inside the same building.

Medical staff worked on Cook immediately, but her injuries were too severe. Doctors pronounced her dead at 3:57 p.m., less than an hour after the impact. News of her death spread quickly through the 500,000-square-foot hospital, leaving kitchen staff and fellow health workers in shock.

Barberton police officers and the Summit County Medical Examiner arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Investigators secured the docking area, inspected the truck, and questioned the driver. Officials have not said if the vehicle had a working backup alarm or if a spotter was present during the turn.

Hospital leadership confirmed they opened an internal safety review alongside the police investigation. Federal workplace safety officials were also notified to look into loading dock safety rules at the facility. Friends described Cook as a dependable, warm presence who loved her job and greeted everyone with a smile.

Her death occurred on the same day local police opened another major investigation elsewhere in the county. Across town at Summit Lake, a fisherman spotted something floating near the shoreline around 5:30 p.m. Emergency crews pulled 24-year-old Raheem Heard of Akron from the water, where he was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner later confirmed Heard died from multiple stab wounds, opening a separate homicide case. Two families in Akron are now left searching for answers after losing loved ones hours apart. Barberton police continue to process evidence from the hospital dock crash as funeral arrangements for Cook are being planned.
