Two North Alabama families are grieving after separate motorcycle accidents took the lives of local men on the same Saturday. Orlando Sanchez, 39, of Decatur, died after his motorcycle hit an SUV during the evening on U.S. Highway 72 in Rogersville. Hours earlier, 31-year-old Douglas A. Wilkins lost his life in a single-vehicle wreck outside Tuscumbia.
The first crash occurred around 5 a.m. along Frankfort Road near Tuscumbia. Wilkins was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when the bike drifted off the paved road and went down a steep embankment. The impact threw Wilkins off the bike, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after arriving.

Wilkins, who lived in the area, was well known among friends for his love of early morning rides. His sudden death left family members and neighbors in Colbert County searching for answers about what caused his motorcycle to leave the roadway before daylight.
Fourteen hours later, emergency calls reported another serious wreck in neighboring Limestone County. At roughly 7:30 p.m., Orlando Sanchez was riding a Harley-Davidson eastbound on U.S. 72 near mile marker 56 in Rogersville. His motorcycle struck the rear end of a Nissan Murano traveling in the same direction.
First responders treated Sanchez at the scene for critical injuries before loading him into an ambulance bound for Athens-Limestone Hospital. Emergency room doctors worked to save the 39-year-old Decatur resident, but he died from his injuries a short time after arriving at the facility.
Friends remembered Sanchez as a devoted family man who spent his working days in Decatur and took to the open road on weekends. His death leaves his family facing the difficult process of planning funeral services and adjusting to his loss.
State troopers continue to investigate the details surrounding both fatal crashes. While the two wrecks happened on different roadways under different conditions, both serve as stark reminders of how quickly a typical weekend ride can turn deadly.
