A sudden roadside disaster shut down a section of U.S. Route 30 in Stark County on Saturday evening after a tree collapsed directly onto a passing vehicle. The incident took place around 5:24 p.m. in Paris Township near milepost 28. It took the life of 35-year-old driver Bridget Reagan, who was traveling westbound through the area.
Reagan was driving a 2023 Jeep Wagoneer along the rural highway corridor when a tree standing in a wooded patch north of the road broke free. The tree fell straight into the westbound lanes and struck the top of Reagan’s SUV as she passed. The violent collision crushed the vehicle cabin and trapped the driver inside.
Emergency calls poured into Stark County dispatchers immediately after the impact. First responders from the Sandy Creek Joint Fire District rushed to the scene alongside officers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Rescue personnel assessed Reagan at the scene, but her injuries were far too severe for life-saving measures.
A representative from the Stark County Coroner’s Office arrived shortly after to make the official pronouncement. Officers blocked off U.S. 30 to keep other drivers safe while investigators mapped out the crash site. The sudden shutdown diverted weekend traffic onto surrounding local roads for several hours.
Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation stepped in to handle traffic control and assist troopers on U.S. 30. Towing operators from Rocky’s Towing and Recovery used heavy equipment to remove the damaged Jeep Wagoneer from the roadway. Highway workers also cleared timber and debris scattered across the pavement before reopening the lanes.
The tragic event has drawn strong reactions from the Minerva community, where Reagan lived. Friends and local residents expressed deep shock over the random nature of the crash. Community members noted how frightening it is that an everyday drive along a familiar highway could end so abruptly.
State troopers remain focused on determining what caused the tree to fall without warning into active traffic. Investigators are reviewing whether recent rain, wind, or rot weakened the root system along the state route. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says its investigation remains open and active as officers complete their crash reconstruction.
