A weekend trail outing ended in tragedy Saturday afternoon when 20-year-old Bruce Kennedy lost his life in a severe off-road crash. Kennedy, a resident of North Berwick, Maine, was riding an ATV through the dense woods of Piscataquis County alongside a friend who was on a separate machine. What began as a routine ride through the remote backcountry quickly turned fatal near Wadleigh Pond.
Around 2:00 p.m., the two riders were moving along a dirt logging path inside the Nahmakanta Maine Public Reserved Land. As Kennedy approached a bend in the road, he failed to handle the turn. His vehicle veered out of control and rolled over, throwing him off as it crashed along the wilderness corridor.

Kennedy’s friend called for help immediately, but the deep woods location made rapid medical access difficult. First responders rushed to the scene near Wadleigh Pond, navigating miles of rough dirt roads. When rescue crews arrived, they found Kennedy with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead right at the scene.
Officials from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife arrived shortly after to lead the crash investigation. Wardens carefully documented the tire tracks, trail conditions, and the resting position of the vehicle to piece together the final moments before the impact.
State wildlife officials noted two major factors during their initial review of the site. Investigators determined that speed played a direct role in Kennedy losing control at the curve. They also confirmed that the 20-year-old was not wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.
Multiple regional emergency crews assisted state wardens at the remote scene. Responders from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine Forest Service, Brownville Fire Department, Milo Fire Department, and LifeFlight all mobilized to assist. Following the initial on-site work, Kennedy’s body was transported to the Lary Funeral Home in Dover-Foxcroft.
The sudden loss has left the small southern Maine community of North Berwick mourning a young life cut short. State game wardens continue to review the details of the crash to finalize their official accident report.
