Early Friday morning turned tragic on a dark stretch of Niles Cortland Road NE when a local rider lost her life in an instant. Heather M. Robinson was out riding her motorcycle on State Route 46 just as the day was beginning to break. Out of nowhere, loose animals blocked her path. She was 42 years old and lived nearby in Cortland.

The fatal crash happened right around 4:20 a.m. in Bazetta Township. Robinson was traveling southbound on her 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 when two horses wandered out onto the roadway. The pre-dawn darkness gave her virtually no time to react as the animals stepped into the travel lane.

Her motorcycle struck one of the horses in the middle of the road. The force of the impact sent the Suzuki veering off the right side of the pavement. It plunged into a nearby roadside ditch, throwing Robinson from the bike.

First responders rushed to the scene on State Route 46, but there was nothing they could do to save her. Emergency personnel pronounced Robinson dead right at the crash site.

State troopers noted that Robinson did everything she could to protect herself that morning. She was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the wreck. Investigators from the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that neither alcohol nor drug impairment appears to be a factor in the crash.

As for the animals, both horses survived the dangerous encounter. Troopers were able to secure both loose horses and return them to their nearby fenced enclosure. One horse suffered minor injuries during the collision, while the other was unharmed.

Friends and locals in Trumbull County are mourning the sudden loss of the Cortland woman. Bazetta Township sits just north of Warren and about 15 miles from Youngstown, a quiet area where many locals know State Route 46 well. For now, the community is left remembering a neighbor whose life ended far too soon on a familiar road.
