A tense multistate manhunt came to an abrupt end in South Carolina after a young man accused of shooting a police officer was found bleeding inside a pulled-over car. Local deputies pulled the vehicle over late Wednesday morning, only to discover twenty-three-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson sitting in the passenger seat with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The search began just before midnight in the quiet town of Warm Springs, Georgia. Sergeant Chris Fisher had just wrapped up a routine traffic stop on Spring Street. He pulled into the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn, sitting alone in his marked cruiser to finish up his paperwork.

According to state investigators, a black 2026 Chevrolet Silverado rolled into the lot and pulled up right beside the patrol car. Authorities say Steverson was behind the wheel of the pickup. Without warning, someone inside the truck opened fire, pumping multiple bullets through the windows of the police cruiser.
Sergeant Fisher never had a chance to react or draw his weapon. The gunshots echoed across the quiet motel grounds, leaving the officer mortally wounded in his seat. Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Spring Street, but Fisher was pronounced dead right there in his vehicle.
The shooter sped away into the night, triggering a massive regional search. State officials issued an immediate Blue Alert, sending warnings across county lines that a dangerous suspect was on the loose. More than a dozen law enforcement agencies joined forces, including local sheriff departments, state troopers, federal marshals, and homeland security agents.
The search stretched across state lines into Anderson County, South Carolina, about twelve hours later. Local deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle around 11:39 a.m. and initiated a traffic stop. When officers walked up to the doors, they found Steverson slumped in the passenger seat with a gun wound.
Paramedics rushed Steverson to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Investigators haven’t shared details on his current condition or revealed who was driving the car he was found in. State agents are still putting the pieces together as both communities process the violence that unfolded overnight.
