Moses Russ had spent months working toward a spot on the street as an Atlanta police officer. At 24, he was already in his sixteenth week at the academy. He was on track to walk across the graduation stage right around Christmas. On Tuesday morning, those plans came to a sudden stop on a quiet stretch of road in Southeast Atlanta.
Russ grew up right here in Fulton County and went through the local public school system. After high school, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and spent time serving his country. When he returned home, he wanted to keep working in public service. He landed a job with the city corrections department in early 2024.

While working in the city corrections department, Russ made a real impression on those around him. Supervisors noted how he treated inmates with genuine respect and went out of his way to help detainees. But his end goal was always to wear the Atlanta Police Department badge.
This past spring, he made the jump and enrolled in the police academy. During the hot summer months, city officials assigned him to work security detail for the local FIFA World Cup events. He handled the crowds, built relationships with veterans on the force, and kept pushing toward his goal.
Outside of work, Russ lived at Unity Place in the English Avenue neighborhood. The community offers affordable housing specifically built for police recruits trying to make ends meet while training. Friends knew him as a grounded young guy who liked working with his hands and riding his Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle.
That motorcycle was how he commuted to the academy every day. Shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday, he was riding south along Moreland Avenue, heading straight to class at the training center. A driver turning left at McDonough Boulevard collided with his bike in the middle of the intersection.
Paramedics rushed Russ to Grady Memorial Hospital under police escort, but doctors could not save him. Now, his classmates and family are left remembering a young man who spent his short adult life trying to protect the city he called home.
