Bradley Montero was a familiar face around Chico, California, a 60-year-old local whose life came to a sudden end early Monday morning. He was driving along Highway 99 when a routine trip turned into a fatal disaster. Family members and close friends in Butte County are now left coping with the overwhelming shock of his sudden absence.
The wreck happened around 3:18 a.m. on August 31, 2026. Montero was behind the wheel of his 2019 Nissan Altima, heading northbound on Highway 99. As he approached the stretch just north of Broyles Road, between the rural communities of Nord and Vina, something went wrong.
For reasons investigators are still trying to figure out, Montero’s car suddenly drifted across the center median. The sedan crossed straight into oncoming traffic on the southbound side of the highway. It went directly into the path of an oncoming 2017 Kenworth truck tractor.
The head-on collision was violent, crushing the front end of the Nissan and trapping Montero inside the twisted metal. Emergency crews rushed to the scene north of Chico, working quickly with specialized tools to cut him free from the wreckage.
Once firefighters freed him, medics loaded Montero into an ambulance and rushed him to Enloe Medical Center in Chico. Doctors and nurses worked to save his life, but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:57 a.m., less than two hours after the crash.
The driver of the big rig, 54-year-old Jose L. Estrada Loza of Anderson, managed to walk away with minor pain on his left side. State troopers confirmed he was not at fault and was not arrested at the scene.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol reported that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the crash. As the investigation continues, people across Chico are holding onto memories of Montero, remembering a quiet local man whose life ended far too soon on a dark stretch of road.
