The LaBelle community is grappling with profound grief following a weekend traffic stop that ended in gunfire along State Road 29. Thirty-three-year-old Edward Young Jr. of Lehigh Acres lost his life during the encounter, leaving behind a devastated family and a neighborhood searching for answers.
The incident kicked off shortly before 5 p.m. on Saturday after dispatchers received concerning reports about a reckless driver slicing through traffic. Hendry County deputies caught up with the matching vehicle along South State Road 29 near Case Road, just south of LaBelle, and pulled it over.
What was supposed to be a standard roadside check escalated in seconds. An exchange of gunfire erupted between the driver and law enforcement officers right there on the asphalt.
Emergency responders rushed Young to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care, but he succumbed to his injuries. Officials confirmed that no deputies sustained any injuries during the exchange.
The deadly confrontation shut down a major stretch of State Road 29 between Case Road and Helms Road for hours. Crime scene techs combed the dark highway for shell casings and physical evidence while traffic was diverted away from the cordoned-off zone.
Friends, relatives, and community members have since flooded social media with tributes, remembering Young and struggling to process the abrupt end to his life. Loved ones describe a deep sense of shock as they navigate this sudden tragedy.
As the investigation drags on, those close to Young remain stuck in limbo, waiting on federal or state authorities to provide a complete and honest accounting of what happened on that stretch of highway.
