Emma Wallace’s assigned parking space at South Granville High School has become a place of remembrance after the 16-year-old student was killed in a crash on U.S. Highway 15.
Flowers, balloons, handwritten notes and a wooden cross now mark space No. 132, where Wallace normally parked. The memorial was created by people who knew her, including close friend Macy Dickerson, as students and staff struggle with the sudden loss of a classmate and teammate.

Wallace died Monday morning, Aug. 17, in a two-vehicle collision near Oxford in Granville County, North Carolina. Police said she was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 15 when her vehicle collided with a vehicle traveling northbound. The other driver remained at the scene, while the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
The tragedy has reached well beyond the school grounds. Wallace was the daughter of Corporal Tony Wallace, who serves as a school resource officer in Creedmoor. Her death has brought grief to the Wallace family, the school community and people connected to local law enforcement.
At South Granville High School, Emma was known for her involvement in sports. She played both volleyball and softball and built friendships through practices, games and everyday school life. Coaches and teammates are now dealing with the absence of someone they expected to see beside them this school year.
Dickerson said the past several days have been difficult. She remembered Emma as kind and as someone who often put other people before herself. Those memories are now part of the growing tribute outside the school.
The school has also been working to help students and staff handle the loss. Principal Ashley Clark said the school’s hearts were broken, while Granville County Public Schools has provided support services as students and employees process what happened.
Creedmoor Police Chief Troy Wheless expressed condolences to the Wallace family, Emma’s friends and teammates, and others affected by her death. The department has also acknowledged the support coming from the community during the family’s difficult days.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Authorities have not released the identity of the other driver. The investigation is expected to help establish the full circumstances of the collision.
Emma’s family scheduled her funeral for Sunday, Aug. 23, at the South Granville High School auditorium. Visitation was planned for noon, followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial was scheduled at Meadowview Memorial Park in Oxford. She would have turned 17 next month.
For her classmates, the memorial outside the school has become more than a collection of flowers and notes. It is a quiet reminder of a young woman whose life was tied to the school, its athletic teams and the people around her. Now, those same people are left remembering Emma Wallace while learning how to move forward without her.
