An elderly man living with dementia walked out of his house on Sunday afternoon and never came back, leaving family and neighbors deeply concerned for his safety.

Athens-Clarke County Police Department launched an active search for 78-year-old Emanuel Dowdy after he vanished from his neighborhood without a trace.

Officers reported that Dowdy was last seen around 3 p.m. near his home located in the 100 block of Leora Circle in Athens, Georgia.

At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a simple black t-shirt along with black shorts.

Because Dowdy suffers from dementia, police emphasize that he may be confused, lost, or unable to ask for directions home on his own.

Local authorities are asking anyone in the neighborhood to keep a close eye out on nearby sidewalks, yards, and local streets.

If you spot Dowdy anywhere in public, police urge you to stay by his side to keep him safe and dial 911 immediately so officers can bring him home.
