Aniya Edwards was only 20 years old with her whole life ahead of her. On the evening of August 25, that promising future was taken away in a flash on the streets of Dallas. What started as an ordinary night drive turned into a terrifying nightmare that ended a young life far too soon.
It happened around 8:35 p.m. in the 8000 block of West Virginia Drive. Police officers rushed to the area after receiving urgent reports of gunfire. When squad cars pulled up to the scene, officers found a chaotic environment and an injured pedestrian lying in the road.

First responders moved fast to help the pedestrian, who had been hit by a moving vehicle. Emergency crews rushed the individual to a nearby hospital. Medical staff later confirmed the pedestrian was in stable condition, but the full story was just beginning to surface.
Steps away from the hit pedestrian, officers located the vehicle involved. Inside the driver’s seat sat 20-year-old Aniya Edwards. She was not just a driver in a traffic crash; she was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Detectives quickly pieced together the initial sequence of events. Someone opened fire on Aniya while she was behind the wheel. The sudden gunshot caused her to lose control of the car, which then struck the pedestrian on West Virginia Drive.
Paramedics worked frantically to save Aniya, rushing her to the hospital in critical condition. Despite the best efforts of the trauma team, her injuries were too severe. She passed away shortly after arriving at the medical center.
As of right now, the shooter remains unknown and on the loose. Dallas Police Department homicide investigators are pulling together evidence and asking anyone with information about the August 25 shooting to come forward immediately.
