In the quiet stretch of Crow Wing County, news travels fast when a neighbor passes away. On Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m., 37-year-old Keith Michael Donovan died when his car struck a train at a rural railroad crossing just west of town.
Keith was a Brainerd native who spent his life rooted in the local community. He was the kind of guy who stayed close to home, building his daily routine around familiar roads and long-time friends.

Those who knew Keith are now dealing with a sudden loss that feels far too heavy. Friends and family remember him as a loyal son and a reliable companion who always made time for the people in his life. His death turned an ordinary weekday morning into a time of deep mourning.
The fatal crash occurred on West Gull River Road Southwest in Sylvan Township, roughly eight miles west of downtown Brainerd near the Corner Store gas station. State troopers confirmed Keith was driving alone in his 2014 Chevrolet Cruze when the vehicle collided with the train.
Emergency crews from Pillager Area Fire and Rescue, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and North Ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after the call. They found the stopped freight train and Keith’s damaged car resting on the south side of the tracks. Paramedics examined Keith immediately, but he had already passed away from his injuries.
According to official reports from the Minnesota State Patrol, Keith was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Investigators also verified that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
For Keith’s family, the official investigation details offer little comfort against the pain of losing him so unexpectedly. What remains are the shared memories, the quiet moments, and a community coming together to honor a life cut short at 37.
