Kirk Plepla, 53, was found dead early Sunday inside a home on South Earl Street in Poteau, Oklahoma. Police were sent to the residence at about 12:42 a.m. after receiving a request for a welfare check.

What officers found changed the nature of the call. Plepla was dead, and investigators determined he appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound. The Poteau Police Department soon brought in the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to assist with the case.

Detectives from Poteau and special agents from the OSBI processed the residence and gathered evidence. Their job was to establish what happened, how the shooting occurred and who was responsible for Plepla’s death.

Investigators eventually identified Plepla’s wife, Mollie Plepla, 53, as the person authorities say shot and killed him. Mollie was arrested and booked into the LeFlore County Jail on a first-degree murder complaint.

The arrest brought a grim turn to a case that began with officers simply checking on someone’s welfare. Instead of finding a person who needed help, officers found a man who had been killed inside his own home.

The circumstances have also left family and friends dealing with a painful reality. Kirk’s death ended a life that included ordinary moments with people who knew him, from family gatherings and conversations to photographs and shared memories.

Those memories are likely to take on a new meaning for the people closest to him. When a death happens so suddenly, even familiar moments can become the things loved ones hold onto most.

The investigation will now continue as authorities work through the evidence collected at the home. Mollie’s arrest does not by itself establish guilt, and the first-degree murder complaint remains an allegation unless proven in court.

For Kirk’s loved ones, however, the immediate reality is already clear. A 53-year-old man is dead, a family is grieving, and a quiet home on South Earl Street has become the scene of a case that has raised serious questions about how the shooting happened.
