A puzzling stop on a busy highway in Overland Park, Kansas, triggered a fatal chain reaction crash that left 24-year-old Faith Monae Lockett dead and two small children hurt. The two-vehicle wreck happened Wednesday evening along the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 Highway, approximately a half-mile south of 159th Street.
Kansas Highway Patrol troopers responded to the crash site shortly after receiving emergency calls around 6:30 p.m. According to initial reports, two Honda Accords were traveling north through Johnson County when the lead car came to a sudden halt on the open road.
The vehicle ahead, a 2021 Honda Accord, stopped abruptly for reasons investigators have not yet determined. The driver of the trailing car, a 2008 Honda Accord carrying Lockett and three others, was forced to make a split-second decision to avoid a direct rear-end collision.
The driver of the older Accord swerved left, but the sudden turn sent the car skidding out of control. The 2008 Accord clipped the stopped 2021 model and flipped over on the highway, inflicting massive damage on the older sedan.
Lockett, who lived in Raytown, Missouri, died from her injuries before paramedics could transport her. Two children inside her vehicle were caught in the rollover. A 3-year-old girl received serious injuries, while a 2-year-old boy sustained minor injuries. Both kids were taken to nearby medical facilities for care.
Investigators noted significant restraint violations inside the overturned car. Official reports indicate that Lockett was not wearing a seat belt, and neither of the two young children was secured by safety restraints. The driver of the 2008 Accord escaped with minor injuries, while both people in the 2021 Accord were completely unharmed.
State troopers continue to investigate what caused the newer Accord to stop so suddenly on Highway 69. Officials emphasized that early crash details remain preliminary, and investigators are working to build a complete picture of the events that led to Lockett’s death.
