A 24-year-old woman lost her life Wednesday evening after a horrific two-car crash on U.S. 69 Highway in Overland Park, Kansas. Authorities identified the victim as Faith Monae Lockett, a resident of Raytown, Missouri. She was riding as a passenger in a 2008 Honda Accord when the car flipped during a chaotic scene just south of 159th Street around 6:30 p.m. Emergency responders pronounced her dead right at the scene.

The fatal wreck happened in Johnson County, right along the border area between Kansas and Missouri. Lockett was travelling northbound in the older Honda sedan alongside three other occupants when the crash took place. What started out as a routine drive on a busy weekday evening quickly transformed into a tragic scene that brought traffic to a crawl and drew multiple emergency teams.

State troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol said the chain reaction started when another vehicle, a 2021 Honda Accord, made a sudden stop directly ahead in the northbound lane. The abrupt stop left the driver of Lockett’s car with almost no distance or time to slow down safely.

In a sudden attempt to avoid smashing into the rear of the stopped sedan, the driver of the 2008 Accord yanked the steering wheel to the left. The sharp evasive turn caused the driver to lose control of the car. The older sedan struck the newer Accord and tumbled over onto its roof, coming to rest with severe damage.

Two young children were also riding in the back of the 2008 Accord during the rollover. A 3-year-old girl suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while a 2-year-old boy escaped with minor injuries. Crash logs revealed that neither child was secured in a safety seat when the collision happened.

Lockett was also not wearing a seat belt at the time of the impact, according to state troopers who documented the wreckage. The driver of her car suffered minor injuries and survived the crash. Meanwhile, both occupants inside the 2021 Honda Accord walked away from the collision without any physical injuries.

Investigators are still searching for answers as to why the newer car came to a dead stop in middle of moving highway traffic. Friends and relatives are left grieving the sudden loss of Lockett, while state officials note that their preliminary crash report will be updated as physical evidence and statements are reviewed.
