A routine Sunday morning check inside a Michigan prison ended with a dead inmate and an active murder investigation. Corrections officers at the Carson City Correctional Facility stepped into a two-person cell early Sunday and found 28-year-old inmate Jonathan Adam Brancheau lying completely unresponsive. Guards tried to revive him right away, but those life-saving efforts failed. Medical staff pronounced him dead on the spot.
State troopers and prison officials are treating the death as a homicide inside the cell block. Brancheau had been locked up since 2019, serving time for a severe sexual offense against a child. His presence behind bars was supposed to be a long one, with decades left on his sentence before this sudden end.

Court records show Brancheau was convicted in Manistee County back in April 2019. He was handed a sentence for first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a victim under 13 years old. That charge carried a minimum of nearly four years and a maximum of 25 years. He was not scheduled for discharge until October 2048.
Life inside the state system proved troublesome long before Sunday. In 2022, Brancheau added another conviction to his record while already behind bars. Authorities caught him with contraband weapons inside the facility, adding another 13 months to five years onto his total prison time.
The state police Major Case Team quickly moved in to secure the cell and gather evidence. Detectives are working alongside the Michigan Department of Corrections internal affairs division to piece together what went down in those early morning hours.
An autopsy by the county medical examiner is slated to pinpoint the exact cause and manner of death. Official details about how Brancheau was killed have not been made public yet, as investigators wait on those autopsy findings.
Carson City sits in Montcalm County in central Michigan, roughly 35 miles northeast of Lansing. The facility houses state prisoners across different security levels, making security checks a regular routine every shift. Now, that quiet town prison is the backdrop of a growing criminal investigation.
