A routine Friday afternoon on the water ended in tragedy at Lake Wawasee. Brian Conwell, 55, stepped into the lake near the sandbar around 2 p.m. to handle a simple task. He was setting up mooring augers, an anchoring system commonly used by local boaters. It was supposed to be a quick chore on a warm late-summer afternoon.
Things went wrong fast. Conwell began struggling in the water, prompting people nearby to call for help immediately. The Kosciusko County Dispatch received the 911 call reporting a missing swimmer near the sandbar, sending local emergency crews into action.

Dozens of first responders rushed to the lake. Dive teams from the Indiana Conservation Officers, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, and the Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory were among the first on scene. Officers from the Warsaw Police Department, Indiana State Police, and local fire departments also joined the search effort.
Rescue crews found Conwell in the water shortly after arriving. Members of the Turkey Creek Fire Department and Syracuse EMS pulled him out and began emergency life-support measures on the spot. Paramedics worked without stopping to try and revive him.
Despite their quick response and continuous CPR, Conwell could not be saved. The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office pronounced the 55-year-old dead at the scene. Indiana Conservation Officers preliminarily classified the event as an accidental drowning. An autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the cause of death.
Conwell’s sudden passing has shaken the local community. Setting up boat anchors on a Friday afternoon is something hundreds of people do around Lake Wawasee without a second thought. For his family and friends, a familiar weekend spot now holds a very different meaning.
People who knew Conwell are choosing to remember the life he lived rather than just his final moments. While investigators complete their routine report, those close to him are coming together to support his family during a difficult time.
Lake Wawasee has returned to its normal rhythm, but the grief remains fresh for those left behind. Conwell’s memory lives on through the family, friends, and neighbors whose lives he touched over the years.
