A sudden tire blowout on a loaded commercial semi-truck can convert a routine highway trip into an unguided projectile within seconds. That precise situation played out early Friday morning along Interstate 20 in Martin County, Texas, ending the life of one veteran driver and sending two others to the hospital.
It was roughly 1 a.m. near eastbound mile marker 151 when a 2022 International tractor-trailer heading west suffered a sudden, severe tire blowout. The unexpected failure pulled the heavy rig out of its lane. It left the pavement, tore right across the center median, and barged into the path of oncoming eastbound lanes.
The out-of-control truck collided with two eastbound tractor-trailers almost at once. The violent impact ripped apart truck cabs and scattered metal across the pavement. Jose Mexicano, a 64-year-old commercial driver from McAllen, suffered fatal injuries during the sudden multi-vehicle crash.
First responders arrived on the scene quickly, working in the dark to clear the wreckage and evaluate the victims. Emergency crews transported Mexicano to Midland Memorial Hospital, where doctors later pronounced him dead. His death stands as a sobering outcome of how quickly conditions change on open stretches of interstate.
The chain reaction also swept up two other experienced Texas truckers behind the wheel. Carlos Lopez, 47, from El Paso, and Michael Washington, 62, from Odessa, were pulled from their trucks and rushed to Midland Memorial Hospital. Both men made it through the heavy impact with minor injuries.
Investigating officers noted that weather played zero role in the collision. Skies were clear and road surfaces were dry throughout the area at 1 a.m. Additionally, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers verified that all three men were wearing seat belts, an essential factor that protected Lopez and Washington from severe harm.
The Texas Highway Patrol remains on the case to pinpoint the exact failure that caused the tire blowout and median crossover. For truckers navigating the state night after night, the incident highlights the ongoing hazards that come with high-speed commercial freight transit.
