Jose Mexicano spent decades working long stretches behind the wheel of commercial big rigs on Texas roads. Early Friday morning, the 64-year-old trucker from McAllen was out doing what he had done countlessly before, moving goods eastward along Interstate 20. But around 1 a.m., an unpredictable tire blowout on an oncoming truck turned a quiet night shift into a sudden fatality near mile marker 151 in Martin County.
State troopers report Mexicano was rolling through the quiet West Texas countryside when severe trouble crossed over from the opposite side of the highway median. A 2022 International tractor-trailer going west experienced a sudden tire failure. The heavy vehicle lost control immediately, cut straight across the center dirt median, and veered into oncoming eastbound traffic.
In a split second, the heavy runaway rig struck two eastbound semi-trucks. Mexicano’s vehicle took a direct, crushing blow in the middle of the wreckage. Emergency responders hurried to the scene and rushed Mexicano to Midland Memorial Hospital, but medical personnel could not save him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Two other drivers caught in the sudden pileup managed to survive the horrific scene. Carlos Lopez, 47, of El Paso, and Michael Washington, 62, of Odessa, were also taken directly to Midland Memorial Hospital. Both men received medical care for minor injuries, surviving what could have easily been a far worse outcome given the physical mass of three fully loaded trucks colliding.
Basic safety equipment played a key role in keeping more lives from being lost in the darkness. Texas Department of Public Safety officials confirmed that all three men had their seat belts buckled when the crash occurred. Road conditions were dry and weather was completely clear at 1 a.m., leaving mechanical equipment failure as the focal point of the event.
For drivers like Mexicano, Interstate 20 serves as an essential lifeline that bridges border cities like McAllen with the rest of the state and country. Thousands of independent haulers traverse these exact lanes every single night, trusting that routine maintenance and careful driving will get them back home safely to their families.
Texas Highway Patrol troopers are conducting a full investigation to understand why the tire blew and how the truck breached the median.
