Derek Edward Knuuttila was a 56-year-old man from Roseburg who spent his Tuesday evening driving down a quiet stretch of road in rural Douglas County. Just before 8:00 p.m. on September 1, 2026, his journey came to a sudden stop on the 7000-block of Tiller Trail Highway, a winding paved road outside Canyonville, Oregon.
Knuuttila was behind the wheel of a 1986 Ford F-150 pickup truck. For reasons investigators are still putting together, the old pickup veered off the roadway. It drifted past the shoulder and hit a roadside tree with heavy force.

Passersby and nearby residents called emergency services almost immediately after coming across the wreck. Emergency dispatchers routed deputies and medical teams to the remote stretch of highway right away.
First responders from Days Creek Fire, South Umpqua Fire, Riddle Fire Department, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance arrived at the scene shortly after the 911 calls came in. They found the F-150 smashed against the tree with Knuuttila trapped inside as the sole occupant.
Fire and medical personnel checked Knuuttila right away, but his injuries were too severe. They pronounced the 56-year-old dead at the crash site before he could be transported to a hospital.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office secured the crash area while medical examiner staff arrived to handle the official steps. Authorities later confirmed that next of kin had been notified of Knuuttila’s passing.
Preliminary investigation details released by local authorities indicate that alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Deputies continue to review the conditions on Tiller Trail Highway to understand exactly how the pickup left the pavement that evening.
