Wednesday night was quiet along Highway 22 until the sudden roar of a runaway pickup echoed down the mountain. Inside the truck, 41-year-old Colorado resident Javier Chavez was riding in the passenger seat as the vehicle descended the steep grade toward Wilson. Within seconds, a routine evening drive turned into a terrifying disaster that claimed his life on the spot.

The heavy Ford F-250 was pulling a gooseneck trailer loaded with a single pallet of decorative stones. As the truck moved eastbound down Teton Pass just before eight o’clock, it began picking up excessive speed on the sharp slope. The driver struggled to maintain control on the ten percent downhill grade, but the weight behind the truck kept pushing it faster.

The vehicle veered out of its lane and crossed directly into oncoming westbound traffic near milepost 6.5. It swept off the left side of the highway and slammed into a deep barrow ditch running along the road. The momentum carried the pickup straight toward a steep dirt driveway leading up to a local home.

That private driveway acted like an incline launch ramp. The truck went airborne, flying through the air before slamming back down and rolling repeatedly across the dirt and pavement. It finally landed on its driver’s side on the opposite side of the road, leaving a field of scattered rocks and twisted metal behind.

Javier Chavez was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The force of the violent rollover ejected him from the cabin, throwing his body nearly forty feet away into the roadside brush. Emergency workers rushed to give him medical care, but he succumbed to his severe injuries while being moved to an awaiting helicopter.

First responders found the pickup driver trapped inside the wrecked cab with critical injuries. Medics worked quickly at the scene to stabilize him before airlifting him directly to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. Meanwhile, neighbors and off-duty rescue workers rushed outside with bottles of water, helping clear debris off the dark highway so emergency vehicles could pass.

State troopers closed down all lanes of Highway 22 for hours while crash investigators measured skid marks and documented the wreckage. For Javier’s family back home in Colorado, the sudden telephone call brought news that no one is ever prepared to hear. A simple trip over the mountains ended in a devastating loss, leaving those who knew Javier to grieve a life cut short on a dangerous stretch of road.
