The arrest of 29-year veteran Major Robert Silas by state agents on Monday night shook the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. State investigators took him into custody after filing serious criminal charges against the long-serving officer.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation handled the arrest, booking Silas straight into the Richmond County jail. Charges filed against the major include pandering, solicitation for sodomy, and violation of oath by a public officer.

Silas spent nearly three decades in local law enforcement, climbing through the ranks to command the agency’s Special Operations Division. His official biography paints a picture of a deeply rooted lawman with extensive training and high-level responsibilities.

Beyond his tactical and operational duties, Silas served as the lead coordinator for the county’s Homeless Task Force. In that role, he directed local law enforcement efforts, community outreach programs, and support services for vulnerable residents across Augusta.

Over his long career, Silas built strong credentials within the law enforcement community. He completed multiple executive management programs and earned a master public information officer certificate from the University of Tennessee.

Outside of his police work, Silas remained a familiar face to local families for decades. He coached youth Little League baseball in the community for more than 40 years, building a strong reputation among local residents.

State authorities have not yet released specific details regarding what triggered the investigation or the events leading up to the arrest. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has been reached for comment regarding Silas’s current employment status.
