Clarke County, Mississippi witnessed a fatal head-on crash Thursday afternoon that claimed the lives of two Laurel residents on Highway 512. Emergency crews responded to the scene near the Souinlovie Creek Bridge around 2:50 p.m. State troopers confirmed that 50-year-old Yolanda Walley and 25-year-old Jacob Height died from injuries sustained in the wreck.

The two victims were traveling together in a compact Chevrolet Aveo just west of the Elwood community. Weather was clear as traffic moved along the two-lane stretch of highway. Friends and neighbors in Laurel described Walley and Height as close companions who often ran errands and traveled the local rural routes together.

Investigators reported that the Aveo collided directly with a massive pulpwood truck carrying harvested timber. The impact crumpled the smaller sedan almost instantly upon contact. Both occupants inside the Aveo died at the scene before paramedics could transport them to a regional medical facility.

Eyewitnesses near the bridge reported hearing the screech of heavy tires right before the sharp thud echoed across the creek bank. Local residents rushed toward the roadway to see if anyone needed aid. However, the damage to the passenger car was severe enough that first responders had to use specialized equipment to reach the victims.

The driver of the pulpwood rig managed to walk away without life-threatening physical injuries. Authorities noted that the truck driver attempted to steer hard toward the shoulder to avoid the incoming vehicle. Despite the quick reaction, the sheer weight and speed of the heavy vehicle made a full dodge impossible on the narrow bridge approach.

Laurel community members began gathering Thursday evening to support the families of Walley and Height. Local pastors offered prayers while friends posted photos and personal memories across community boards. The sudden loss hit the small town hard, as both families have long-standing roots in Jones County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers closed off Highway 512 for several hours to clear timber debris and perform crash reconstruction tests. Officers are continuing their investigation into what caused the initial lane departure. Funeral arrangements for both Walley and Height will be announced by local funeral homes in Laurel later this week.
