A Wednesday morning drive turned fatal on Long Island when a Sayville man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a local firehouse. Nassau County police identified the driver as 41-year-old Michael Peattie. Officers said the wreck occurred around 10:23 a.m. along Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

Peattie was driving a 2024 Mazda eastbound along the busy street when his car veered off the road. The sedan struck a wooden utility pole near the curb before crashing into Bethpage Fire Department Station 4.

Firefighters inside the building heard the loud crash and immediately ran outside. First responders pulled Peattie from the wreckage and rushed him to a nearby hospital with severe traumatic injuries. Emergency room doctors worked to save him, but he died shortly after arrival.

Back in Sayville, word of the sudden accident spread fast through local schools and youth sports groups. Peattie was well known across the South Shore community as a dedicated mentor. He spent years coaching kids through Catholic Youth Organization basketball and worked directly within the local school district.

Friends remembered him as a quiet, selfless family man who prioritized his wife and children above everything else. Neighbors said he was always the first person to step up when local sports teams needed a volunteer coach or organizer.

Hours after the crash, friends started an online fundraiser to help his family with sudden expenses. The campaign raised nearly fifty thousand dollars in less than a day as parents, teachers, and former players chipped in.

Nassau County police detectives are still investigating what caused the Mazda to leave the roadway. Authorities have not said whether a medical issue or mechanical failure played a role, and no other cars were involved in the crash.
