A 16-year-old kid went to a downtown Chicago skate park on a Thursday night and never made it back home. Dorian D. Smith Jr. was hanging out near Roosevelt Road and Michigan Avenue when gunfire broke out around 9:05 p.m. By the time officers reached the spot, the teenager was lying on the pavement with a severe gunshot wound.

Paramedics rushed Dorian to Northwestern Hospital just a short drive away. Emergency room doctors worked fast to save him, but his injuries were too deep. Medical staff pronounced him dead shortly after arrival, turning a routine evening into a nightmare for his family.

Dorian was only 16, an age when teens are picking out high school classes, hanging with friends, and figuring out what comes next. Instead of watching him grow into an adult, his family now has to plan his funeral. Friends remember him as a regular kid who loved being out with his peers and having a good time.

The shooting sent shockwaves through the neighborhood and the city’s youth culture. Grant Park is a massive public space in downtown Chicago where teenagers routinely gather after school to ride skateboards, hang out, and relax.

Back at the scene near Roosevelt and Michigan, police tape cordoned off the concrete bowls and ramps where teenagers usually spend their evenings. Patrol cars blocked nearby lanes while officers swept the park under bright streetlights.

Forensics workers recovered multiple shell casings scattered across the ground. Investigators also collected an abandoned book bag found near the scene, bagging it as potential evidence to help identify who fired the shots.

Area 3 detectives are leading the murder investigation. As of Friday, police had not released information on what triggered the shooting, and no suspects were taken into custody.

While detectives keep searching for leads, Dorian’s family is left dealing with the sudden absence of a loved one. His empty bedroom and silent phone serve as quiet reminders of a young life cut short without warning.
