Monday evening in Ocean County turned tragic when police walked into a home on Windward Drive and found 69-year-old Eileen Garvin dead on the floor. Standing right beside the scene was a shocking sight that left even veteran officers stunned.
Her 67-year-old husband, William Garvin, was sitting in a chair nearby with a large knife sticking straight out of his chest. The emergency call came in around 6:30 p.m. on Labor Day as a domestic violence report, pulling local officers directly into the couple’s residence.

First responders rushed inside to secure the scene and save whoever they could. They found Eileen unresponsive on the floor, and medical personnel quickly confirmed she had already passed away from her injuries.
Paramedics focused immediately on William, who was still alive despite the blade in his chest. Emergency crews rushed him to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, where doctors worked to stabilize him.
Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit quickly partnered with local police and sheriff’s investigators to figure out what happened inside the house. Blood evidence and scene analysis helped investigators piece together the timeline of events.
By Tuesday, authorities officially concluded that William killed his wife before turning the weapon on himself. Prosecutors determined the chest wound was self-inflicted in an apparent suicide attempt right after the attack.
Law enforcement officers went to the hospital and formally served William with a murder charge while he lay in his hospital bed. As soon as medical staff clear him for release, officers will haul him straight to the Ocean County Jail to await a formal detention hearing.
