The Aiken County Coroner’s Office formally declared the driver dead on the scene at 9:43 p.m., just 31 minutes after the crash. Officials noted that the extreme heat and fire damage required formal identification procedures before public release. An autopsy was scheduled to take place in Newberry to determine the official cause of death.

While the driver died at the scene, a passenger managed to survive the violent collision. First responders pulled the injured passenger from the wreck and rushed them to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Officials have not yet released the identity or condition of the survivor.

For friends and relatives of Damira Hammonds, the sudden loss brought instant heartbreak. People who knew her remembered her as a vibrant presence whose absence leaves an undeniable void.

South Carolina Highway Patrol officers and county coroner investigators stayed at the scene late into the night. Physical evidence, tire marks, and vehicle damage were documented as troopers tried to reconstruct the car’s path before it left the right side of the road.

As the investigation continues, the local community remains focused on supporting the grieving family and checking on the surviving passenger. A quiet street in Aiken now stands as the site of a life cut far too short, with loved ones searching for answers.
