A Sunday evening in South Bakersfield turned tragic when 34-year-old Crystal Louise Spores lost her life on a busy stretch of roadway. The collision happened around 7:31 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Union Avenue. Family and friends are left trying to process the sudden loss of a woman whose life ended far too soon.
Crystal was stepping across South Union Avenue when a vehicle traveling northbound hit her. The impact left her with severe injuries right in the middle of the roadway. Before anyone could check on her or call for assistance, the driver stepped on the gas and sped away into the night.

Bakersfield Police Department officers and local firefighters rushed to the scene within minutes. Emergency workers tried everything they could to help her, but the injuries were too severe. Fire Department personnel pronounced Crystal dead right there on the asphalt.
News of the crash spread quickly through the area as family members and close friends gathered near the tape. Traffic along South Union Avenue was shut down between White Lane and Pacheco Road for hours. Loved ones stood in grief near the crash site as investigators marked evidence and mapped out the scene.
While officers worked the area, nearby security cameras picked up crucial details. Surveillance footage showed a white Ford pickup truck leaving the scene right after the collision. That video gave investigators their first real break in finding out who was behind the wheel.
By 11:00 p.m. that same night, officers tracked the suspected pickup to a home in the 3600 block of Cottonwood Road. The truck had major damage on its front end. Officers arrested 36-year-old Guadalupe Hernandez after he admitted he was the driver at the time of the crash.
Crystal’s death is a painful reminder of how fast a life can be taken on local streets. Behind the police reports and street closures was a real person with people who cared deeply about her. Her family now faces the hard task of saying goodbye while waiting for justice to take its course.
