Cameron Lyon was driving westbound on U.S. 33 on Sunday evening when an oncoming SUV crossed the median divider and smashed directly into his car. The 23-year-old Caledonia resident was traveling near U.S. 22 in Hocking Township around 6:15 p.m. when the sudden collision took place.

State troopers reported that an eastbound 2016 GMC Terrain drifted off the right side of the road. The driver overcorrected, sending the SUV rolling across the median into oncoming westbound lanes, right into the path of Cameron’s 2025 Chevrolet Trax.

The impact crushed both vehicles, and the rolling GMC caught fire shortly after coming to a stop in the roadway. First responders from several local departments rushed to the crash site to clear the scene and treat those trapped inside.

Emergency personnel stabilized Cameron at the scene before Hocking Township EMS transported him to Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster. Doctors worked to save him, but he died from his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Cameron was not driving alone on Sunday night. His passenger, 23-year-old Abrielle Kerns of Lancaster, was also hurt in the heavy collision. Berne Township EMS brought her to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where medical staff treated her for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the GMC was identified as 33-year-old Alvaro Uriber of Columbus. Lancaster EMS took Uriber to Fairfield Medical Center, where doctors treated him for minor injuries before releasing him.

Investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol noted that alcohol is a suspected factor in the fatal wreck. State troopers are continuing to gather physical evidence and reconstruct the crash as the investigation moves forward.
