Pamela Ellis was 56 years old when her life ended on a quiet street in Jackson, Mississippi. It was early Sunday morning, September 6, 2026, when a driver struck her and sped away into the night. Officers found her lying in the road near North State Street and Briarwood Drive just before 2:00 a.m.
For her family and friends, the sudden news was devastating. Ellis was a woman whose presence held her family together. She was a mother, a sister, and a loyal friend whose absence now leaves an empty space in the lives of those who knew her best.

The crash happened during the quietest hours of the night. Passersby spotted someone lying on the dark pavement and called 911 around 1:56 a.m. By the time police arrived at the scene, the driver who hit her had already vanished.
Emergency crews responded quickly, but Ellis died from her injuries right there in the roadway. Officers closed off the intersection for hours, using lights to search the street for tire marks, broken glass, or vehicle parts that might help identify the car.
People living near North State Street know how dark that stretch of road gets at night. Even so, relatives cannot understand how anyone could hit a human being and drive off without stopping to call for help.
Those who knew Ellis say her memory will live on through the stories they share with one another. They remember her warmth, her conversation, and the strong ties she built with those around her. Her family is now left to plan a funeral while waiting for answers.
Jackson police are treating the crash as a fatal hit-and-run and are asking the community for assistance. Anyone who was driving near North State Street and Briarwood Drive around 2:00 a.m. or saw a vehicle with fresh body damage is urged to call JPD at 601-960-1800.
