Juan Ledesma woke up Tuesday, September 1, and went to work just like any other day. He was part of a construction crew digging near West Morrow Road and Wilson Avenue in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. He had a family counting on him back home, including his wife and their 16-year-old daughter. By early afternoon, a routine workday turned into every family’s worst nightmare.

Around midday, the rest of the crew headed out to grab some lunch. Ledesma stayed behind inside the open trench to keep working on the job. Working down in a dirt ditch is quiet, heavy labor. You expect the walls around you to hold up while you get the job done.

While he was down there alone, the earth gave way without warning. Dirt and heavy debris caved in right on top of him. There was no time to run or yell for help. The sheer weight of the soil crushed him before anyone even realized what was happening.

When his coworkers came back from their break, they found the collapse and called 911 right away. Emergency crews from the Sand Springs Fire Department and Sand Springs Police Department rushed to the intersection. First responders pulled him out, but it was already too late. Ledesma died right there at the worksite.

Ledesma was a dedicated family man through and through. He went to work every morning to put food on the table and make sure his daughter had a good future ahead of her. His 16-year-old girl and his wife are now left trying to make sense of a normal Tuesday that ended in a tragic loss.

Losing a husband and father so suddenly creates an immediate emotional and financial shock. Bills do not stop coming just because a family is grieving. Without his income, his wife and daughter face a tough road ahead while dealing with deep heartbreak.

People in the local community are stepping up to help them get through it. Friends and neighbors set up an online fundraiser to raise money for funeral costs and everyday living expenses. The goal is to give the family one less thing to worry about while they mourn.

Worksite accidents happen in the blink of an eye, but the impact lasts forever for the people left behind. As the investigation moves forward in Sand Springs, local residents continue to keep Ledesma’s wife and daughter in their thoughts and prayers.
