Wednesday night was supposed to be a routine evening drive through rural Madera County. Instead, it turned into an overwhelming tragedy for a Merced County family when a father and his 13-year-old son lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash.
Pedro Chavez Garcia, 42, and his young son, Pedro Chavez, were riding northbound inside a 2022 Honda CR-V along Road 9 at around 8:40 p.m. Three other passengers were riding in the vehicle with them, traveling through the quiet agricultural corridor.

The young teenager was a student at Weaver Middle School. He was just getting settled into a new school year alongside his classmates before the sudden collision cut his young life short.
According to state troopers with the California Highway Patrol, their trip came to a sudden halt at the intersection of Avenue 21. A 2015 GMC Sierra pickup traveling eastbound blew straight through a posted stop sign, slamming right into the driver side of the Honda.
The impact was violent enough to kill four of the occupants in the Honda almost immediately. Emergency responders rushed to the rural crossroads, but there was nothing they could do for the four victims, pronouncing them dead at the scene.
Local officials later identified the other two deceased passengers as 36-year-old Gerardo Ramirez Aguilar and 52-year-old Cayetano Beyza-Mendoza. A fifth person riding inside the Honda managed to survive the crash and was taken for medical care.
Meanwhile, the two people riding in the GMC pickup walked away from the wreckage with only minor injuries. Highway patrol officers are still piecing together the timeline, while community members across Merced County mourn the loss of a father and son taken without warning.
