It started like any other Friday afternoon football practice on the grass field at Northwest Guilford Middle School. Caden Sorrell, an eighth grader wearing jersey number 42, took off on a routine warm-up lap around the field with his teammates. A few steps later, the 13-year-old suddenly collapsed to the ground, his heart stopping completely without any warning signs.
His older sister, Vanessa Clark, was doing a quick shopping run at Walmart when her mother called, her voice shaken. Vanessa dropped what she was doing and raced straight to Cone Health Hospital in Greensboro, where doctors were working frantically to save her younger brother’s life.

Medical staff placed Caden on ECMO and a specialized heart pump to force oxygen through his body and take over for his failing heart and lungs. His family stayed by his side through two long days in intensive care, hoping for a miracle as doctors fought to stabilize him. But the damage to his system was too severe, and Caden passed away on Sunday.
To those who loved him, Caden was a sweet, sharp, and genuinely kind kid who always seemed to bring people together. He was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan who loved sports, cracked jokes, and made a point of making everyone around him feel special and included.
Vanessa remembered a playful wrestling match they had in their living room not long ago. She thought she could easily pin her younger brother, but Caden quickly proved her wrong, leaving them both laughing on the floor. It is those simple, noisy family moments that his relatives are holding onto now as they face his sudden absence.
The loss hits especially hard at home because Caden leaves behind his twin brother and three other siblings. Doctors suspect an undetected genetic condition may have triggered the sudden cardiac arrest, so his brothers and sisters are now preparing for medical screenings to check their own heart health.
Back at the school, students and staff have turned the spirit rock into a quiet memorial filled with flowers, signed footballs, and handwritten cards. Teammates plan to gather under the stadium lights for a vigil to honor Caden, remembering a teammate who brought energy and heart to every single practice.
