Karen Joseph was driving down Warwick Road on a late Monday afternoon when an oncoming police chase abruptly ended her life. The 62-year-old Stratford resident was behind the wheel of her Ford Puma around 5:40 p.m. with her daughter sitting in the passenger seat. Without warning, a black Audi A3 speeding away from a pursuing patrol car slammed into her vehicle along the A439.

The impact left Joseph with critical injuries while her daughter managed to survive with minor cuts and bruises. Paramedics rushed Joseph to a nearby hospital, where doctors fought to stabilize her. She remained in critical care for four days before succumbing to her injuries on Friday.

The driver who hit her, 19-year-old Roman Kalas, died instantly at the crash site. An initial post-mortem examination showed that Kalas suffered fatal head and chest trauma during the high-impact collision.

Local authorities revealed that the dangerous chain of events began just minutes earlier on Birmingham Road. A single officer in a marked patrol car spotted Kalas in the Audi A3 and attempted a routine traffic stop. Kalas refused to pull over, prompting the officer to turn on emergency lights and sirens.

The resulting pursuit lasted roughly six minutes as the Audi sped through the area with police in pursuit. It ended on Warwick Road when the Audi crossed paths with Joseph’s Ford Puma. The sudden collision destroyed both cars and brought traffic along the A439 corridor to a standstill.

Because the fatal wreck happened during an active police chase, Warwickshire Police automatically referred the incident to independent watchdog oversight. The Independent Office for Police Conduct launched a full investigation on the evening of the crash. Investigators returned to the scene to reconstruct the pursuit route and gather evidence.

Watchdog officials are currently examining dashcam footage recorded by the police cruiser throughout the six-minute chase. Authorities are also combing through nearby neighborhood security cameras and asking motorists with dashcam recordings to hand over any footage. Formal inquests into the deaths of both Joseph and Kalas are scheduled to open as investigators work to determine whether police followed proper chase protocols.
