Jack Grassel, a longtime jazz guitarist and teacher from Southeastern Wisconsin, died August 26, 2026, after a two-car collision in Caledonia. He was 77 years old.

The crash happened when Grassel’s vehicle drifted over the center line and hit another car head-on. The driver of that second vehicle, an 83-year-old, died from injuries sustained in the impact.

New details from Grassel’s wife and singing partner, Jill Jensen, show that the accident was not a simple steering mistake. She explained that Grassel suffered a major medical emergency and lost consciousness right before his car moved into oncoming traffic.

The fatal event came just nineteen months after Grassel suffered a stroke in January 2025. That health scare put his playing on hold and forced him into months of physical recovery.

Grassel spent that time doing the hard work to regain his strength. He wanted to get back on stage and play the guitar again alongside his wife.

He managed to pull off that goal earlier in August 2026. The couple performed a live set together, which turned out to be their final show before the accident two weeks later.

Over his long career, Grassel built strong ties across Racine, Milwaukee, and Mount Pleasant. He spent decades giving guitar lessons, writing original tunes, and playing local venues.

Friends, students, and fellow musicians across the region are now dealing with the double tragedy. For Jensen and the local jazz scene, his sudden death leaves a clear hole that will not be easy to fill.
