A routine Wednesday morning turned into every parent’s worst nightmare in Waynesboro when an emergency broke out at Westwood Hills Elementary School. Reports of an active shooter swept through the community, forcing the school into a total lockdown as police rushed to the scene.

Inside the building, teachers moved fast to lock down classrooms and guide young students away from windows and doors. Children sat quietly in the dark while officers filled the hallways outside, working to protect the kids and clear every section of the building.

Outside, fear spread fast among local families as word of the situation reached social media and neighborhood text groups. Early radio reports mentioned an active shooter on campus, leaving parents desperate for facts about whether anyone was injured or if shots had been fired.

The high-tension ordeal began to resolve when the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office announced at roughly 10:23 a.m. that the school was contained and secured. Deputies confirmed that all children inside were safe and that the immediate danger had passed.

Rather than allowing a rush of cars to block the school driveways, law enforcement ordered parents to stay away from the campus grounds. Emergency workers needed clear roads to bring in school buses and safely transport the children away from the scene.

Waynesboro Public Schools directed parents to gather at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 1904 Mount Vernon Street. Families were told to go to the lower fellowship hall and follow the posted entry signs to reunite with their young ones.

Though the morning ended safely, the emotional impact lingered for families across the area. Parents hugged their young children tight inside the church hall, thankful that school staff and local officers handled the crisis quickly and kept everyone out of harm’s way.
