A quiet Saturday night turned into a tragic scene along a rural stretch of road in La Crosse County. Emergency dispatchers received a frantic 911 call around 12:32 a.m. reporting a single-vehicle rollover crash on County Road VV in the Township of Farmington.
Deputies and first responders raced out to the location as fast as they could. When they got to the crash site, they found 20-year-old Mitchell R. Berg lying outside the overturned vehicle. The violent roll had thrown him completely out of the car onto the ground.
Responders worked quickly on the scene to try and save Mitchell’s life. Despite their best efforts, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead right at the crash site.
At just 20 years old, Mitchell was at the very start of his adult life. Friends and family across the community are now left dealing with a sudden, painful loss that happened in a matter of seconds.
Another young man was in the vehicle when it went off the road. Braydon S. Lockington, also 20 years old, was riding in the passenger seat during the crash. Braydon survived the rollover, though he needed immediate medical attention from paramedics on scene.
Ambulance crews loaded Braydon up and took him straight to Mayo Hospital. Doctors treated him for injuries that law enforcement later described as non-life-threatening.
Investigators from the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office spent hours at the scene looking into what caused the wreck. Deputies confirmed that neither Mitchell nor Braydon was wearing a seatbelt, and that high speed and alcohol were both major factors in the fatal accident.
