The weekend started like any other for the family traveling together through Montgomery County. They were packed inside a Toyota Camry, just trying to get to their destination safely.

Musammat Shamima Begum, a 46-year-old mother from Burke, Virginia, sat inside the car alongside her family. Her 23-year-old daughter, Areebah Jahin of Alexandria, was right there with her.

It was shortly before seven o’clock on Saturday evening when everything changed in a split second. They were heading south on Interstate 270 near Democracy Boulevard.

Without any warning, a Ford Mustang came barreling straight at them from the completely wrong direction. The driver of the Mustang was traveling northbound right in the southbound lanes.

The head-on impact was catastrophic and immediate. Both Shamima and Areebah suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead right there at the scene.

Two other people inside the Toyota also suffered severe impacts. A 62-year-old man who was driving and an eight-year-old girl riding as a passenger were rushed to local hospitals by ambulance.

The crash shut down the southbound lanes for nearly five hours as troopers investigated the wreckage. Friends and family are now left trying to process a sudden loss that makes very little sense.
