Micah Jo Barnett took the handoff, cut through the defense, and scored a touchdown in the opening quarter of Saturday’s season opener. Moments later, the junior running back for William Jewell College collapsed on the field, shocking everyone in the stadium.
First responders ran onto the field right away to give him emergency medical care. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead shortly after he arrived.
Barnett was a junior running back who lived to play football. His teammates and coaches knew him as a dedicated player and a genuinely kind person who loved being out on the turf.
Before coming to William Jewell, Barnett played high school ball just down the road at Liberty North. He was a key part of their 2023 team, building deep bonds with his teammates that stayed strong long after graduation.
At this time, doctors and school officials have not released any official cause of death. The exact medical breakdown of what happened on the field remains unknown.
The loss hit the campus in Liberty, Missouri, extremely hard. School leaders set up grief counseling for students and staff, and a silent vigil was arranged for 8 p.m. on the campus quad to honor his life.
A former youth coach and close family friend created a GoFundMe page to help the Barnett family pay for sudden funeral costs, setting a goal of $35,000. People across the community continue sharing the campaign to support his parents during this heavy time.
