Nicholas Nevola was riding his motorcycle down Route 6 West on a clear Thursday night, heading toward the highway connection near Johnston. The 59-year-old Cranston resident was just minutes away from his destination when things went terribly wrong around 8:45 p.m. He missed the turn for the I-295 South on-ramp entirely, sending his bike off course.

The momentum carried Nevola straight off the roadway before he could pull back onto the asphalt. His motorcycle struck a concrete bridge abutment with heavy force, throwing him sideways into a large metal highway sign nearby. The violent sequence of impacts left him lying severely injured along the edge of the dark thoroughfare.

Passersby called emergency responders, and Rhode Island State Police troopers rushed to the scene just west of Providence. Paramedics worked quickly to stabilize Nevola right on the shoulder before loading him into an ambulance. He was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries, but doctors could not save him, and he was pronounced dead later that night.

Back home in Cranston, news of Nevola’s death hit hard. Friends and neighbors knew him as a long-time local guy who lived about five miles southeast of the crash site. The suddenness of the loss left family and acquaintances searching for answers about how a routine evening drive ended so tragically.

State troopers shut down parts of Route 6 West for hours while crash reconstruction experts surveyed the area. Marks on the pavement and damage to the highway sign showed the path Nevola’s motorcycle took after missing the ramp. Investigators confirmed early on that no other cars or trucks were involved in the wreck.

Police have not said what caused Nevola to lose control or miss the turning lane to I-295. Road conditions were clear, and investigators are looking into whether lighting, a mechanical issue, or a sudden medical event played a role. State police officials noted that no other injuries or secondary crashes took place during the emergency response.

The investigation remains open as troopers gather evidence to piece together Nevola’s final moments on the road. For now, the small community in Cranston is left grieving a neighbor, while authorities continue working to determine why a familiar highway turn turned fatal.
