A young woman from Youngsville lost her life Thursday night while riding an electric scooter along a dark stretch of Savoy Road. Police say 30-year-old Kourtney Picou died at the hospital shortly after a car hit her near the 1200 block around 8:30 p.m.

People who knew Picou are struggling to accept what happened. She grew up in the area and had deep roots in the community, making the sudden news hard to take for her family and close friends.

Emergency responders got the distress call around 8:32 p.m. and rushed out to the scene. Paramedics with Acadian Ambulance worked on Picou right on the asphalt before loading her up and driving fast to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Medical staff at the hospital tried everything they could to save her. But the injuries from the impact were just too severe, and she passed away a short time later.

Back at the crash site, Youngsville police officers blocked off the street to figure out how the wreck happened. Preliminary reports show that the section of Savoy Road where Picou was riding had almost no streetlights turned on.

Officers noted that Picou was wearing dark clothes at the time. Her electric scooter also lacked any front or rear safety lights, which made her hard to spot for anyone driving down the unlit road.

The driver of the car stayed right there after the collision, called 911, and talked with officers. Police Chief Jean Paul Broussard said officers checked out the driver on the spot and found no signs that drugs or alcohol played any role.

As the investigation continues, family members and friends are leaning on each other to cope with the loss. They say they want people to remember Picou for who she was every day, not just for the accident that took her away.
