Family and friends in St. Thomas are mourning the loss of 21-year-old Gerell L. Reed, who was killed early Thursday morning in a shooting along Judy M. Gomez Highway. The young man’s sudden death has left his hometown reeling as relatives deal with the shock of losing someone with so much life left to live.
The incident unfolded around 2:49 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when the Virgin Islands Police Department’s ShotSpotter system detected several gunshots along the highway. Moments after the automated gunfire alert sounded, dispatchers received a call reporting a single-vehicle crash nearby.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a vehicle that had crashed directly into a wall. Inside sat Reed, unresponsive and bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical technicians evaluated Reed at the scene, but he showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead right there on the road. Authorities later contacted his next of kin, who formally identified the 21-year-old victim.
For those who knew Reed, his death is not just another crime report. He was a son, a brother, and a loyal friend whose absence creates a void that cannot be filled by statistics or police logs.
His death marks the 15th homicide on St. Thomas this year and brings the total count across the U.S. Virgin Islands to 33 in 2026. Each new case represents a growing toll on local families watching young lives cut short.
As of Thursday, police have not publicly named any suspects or revealed what led up to the shooting. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact local law enforcement or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers as the community looks for answers.
