Michael Vicars, 45, was walking along Bristol Highway in Scott County, Virginia, early Monday when he was struck by a vehicle and killed. The vehicle did not stop, and Virginia State Police are now trying to find the driver.

The crash was reported in the 2900 block of Bristol Highway sometime between approximately 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on August 24, 2026. Investigators said Vicars was in the eastbound lane of traffic when the vehicle hit him.

Vicars, who was from Kingsport, Tennessee, suffered fatal injuries in the collision. He died at the scene, according to Virginia State Police. The crash left investigators facing a case where the person believed to be responsible was no longer there when authorities arrived.

Police have not identified the driver involved in the crash. The vehicle left the area after striking Vicars, and investigators are asking anyone who may have seen something unusual around the time of the crash to come forward.

The early-morning timing could make the investigation more difficult. Still, authorities are looking for witnesses and anyone who may have information about the vehicle or what happened on Bristol Highway before and after the collision.

For Vicars’ family and friends, the loss goes far beyond the details of a police investigation. He was 45 and had a life in Kingsport, Tennessee, with people who knew him, cared about him and now have to deal with his sudden death.

Virginia State Police are asking anyone with information to contact Division Four Dispatch at (540) 444-7788. Information can also be sent by email to questions@vsp.virginia.gov. Investigators want to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash or knows anything about the vehicle that left the scene.

The case remains an investigation, but one fact is clear: Vicars was killed while walking along Bristol Highway, and the driver involved did not remain at the scene. His family is now left waiting for answers as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.
