John C. Taylor, 83, of Monroe, was seriously injured Monday morning when the 2026 Cadillac OPTIQ he was driving was struck head-on by a Ford Escape on N. Telegraph Road in Frenchtown Township, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash was reported at about 10:04 a.m. Aug. 24, 2026, northeast of Hurd Road. Investigators said a gray 2010 Ford Escape driven by Aaron L. Heiss, 48, of Flat Rock, was traveling southwest on N. Telegraph Road when it crossed the center line while going through a curve.

The Ford then slammed into Taylor’s red Cadillac OPTIQ. The collision caused serious injuries to Taylor, who was taken to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital for medical treatment.

Heiss was also wearing his seat belt when the crash happened, and the airbags in his Ford Escape deployed. Emergency crews responded, but Heiss was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said intoxication was not a factor. Investigators are now focused on what caused Heiss’ vehicle to cross into the opposite lane.

At this point, authorities have not publicly identified a reason for the lane departure. The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation, including what happened as Heiss approached and negotiated the curve.

The collision left two drivers facing very different outcomes from the same violent impact. Taylor survived but suffered serious injuries, while Heiss, a 48-year-old Flat Rock resident, died at the scene.

The investigation is expected to determine what happened in the seconds before the Ford crossed the center line. No additional cause has been given by authorities at this time.
